What LinSync does with your files and data
Last updated 29 October 2026.
The short version
- LinSync runs on your computer. It has no servers of its own and no account to sign in to. Brilliant Hosting never receives your files or anything about them.
- Your files go straight from your computer to where you send them: a drive, your other computer, or a cloud service you connect yourself.
- If you connect Google Drive (or another cloud), the key it gives LinSync stays on your computer. From Google Drive, LinSync asks only for the files LinSync itself puts there.
- The app has no adverts, no tracking and no analytics.
The app
LinSync is a program you install on your own computer. It copies, mirrors, moves or syncs folders on your instructions. What it works with stays on your computer:
- Your files are read from your computer and written to the places you choose. LinSync doesn't send them anywhere else.
- Your backups' settings and history are kept in LinSync's settings folder on your computer.
- Passwords for password zips are used on your computer to lock the zip. A backup that runs by itself keeps its zip password in your Mac's Keychain, or on Linux in the system's password store. A password typed in Expert is used once and not kept.
- Your other computers are reached directly over SSH, the secure login built into Mac and Linux, at home or through Tailscale if you use it.
Google Drive
You can connect your Google Drive so that backups go straight there. This is how that works:
- Signing in. You sign in on Google's own page, in your web browser. LinSync never sees your Google password. Google then gives LinSync an access key, which LinSync keeps only on your computer, in a settings file that only your user account can read. Brilliant Hosting never sees it.
- What LinSync may reach. LinSync asks Google only for the
drive.filepermission: "See, edit, create and delete only the specific Google Drive files you use with this app". It can see and change only the files and folders LinSync itself created in your Drive, such as your backups. It can't see anything else you keep there. - What LinSync does with it. Only what you ask: it uploads your backups, lists what's in your backup folders, copies files back down when you ask, and renames or deletes files there when you tell it to (a Mirror backup also moves replaced and deleted files into its archive folder). It also checks the connection still works.
- Nothing else. Data from your Google account is never sent to Brilliant Hosting or anyone else, never sold, never used for advertising, never used to train AI models, and never read by people.
- Taking access away. In LinSync, open More, then Cloud services, and press Disconnect: the key is deleted from your computer. You can also remove LinSync's access at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Files LinSync put in your Drive stay there until you delete them.
LinSync's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Other cloud services
Dropbox, OneDrive, Box, pCloud, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2 and other storage you connect work the same way: their keys stay on your computer, LinSync only does what you ask with them, and nothing passes through Brilliant Hosting. What you store with a cloud company is covered by that company's own privacy policy.
Files always travel over an encrypted connection. Sent as files, a cloud company can read what you store with it. A password zip is locked (AES-256) on your computer before it goes, so the cloud company can't.
This website
- No cookies. linsync.co.uk sets none.
- Visit counts. Visits are counted with Umami, run by Brilliant Hosting itself at stats.brilliant-hosting.com: which page, where the visit came from, the browser and device type, and the country. No personal details, no cookies, and no IP addresses are kept.
- Server logs. The web server, rented from Hetzner, keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, page asked for, browser) for 7 days, for security and fixing problems, then deletes them.
Who we are, and your rights
LinSync is made by Brilliant Hosting, Somerset, England. Under UK data protection law you can ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. As above, through the app we hold nothing; through this website, only the 7 days of server logs. Email dan@brilliant-hosting.com. If you're unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
If this policy changes, the new version will be here, with its date at the top.
